The answer isn’t found in a statement of intent. Nor in a marketing promise. Bioscore Sustainability<\/a> is a sustainability certification for tourist accommodations. It’s based on data, documented evidence, and an independent external audit. In this article, we explain what the Bioscore certification evaluates. We also cover how it’s verified, what it means for a traveler, and how it fits within the main international sustainability initiatives in tourism.<\/p>\n

What Bioscore Sustainability is<\/h2>\n

Bioscore Sustainability is a Spanish company based in Valencia. It combines technology, consulting, and data analysis. This helps tourism organizations manage sustainability in an objective and measurable way.<\/p>\n

It works with hotel chains, independent hotels, and tourist apartments. It also works with campsites, rural accommodations, and, more broadly, companies operating in the tourism sector.<\/p>\n

Its certification evaluates the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into the establishment’s management system. To do this, it checks whether processes, tools, indicators, and evidence exist. These elements allow sustainability to be managed systematically and continuously improved.<\/p>\n

The certification also classifies the maturity of the management system. It does so through different compliance levels. This makes it possible to understand how deeply sustainability is integrated into the organization.<\/p>\n

The hotel receives a seal based on the level reached. There are four levels: Seal C (50\u201360%), Seal B (60\u201370%), Seal A (70\u201380%), and Seal A+ (over 80%).<\/p>\n

That’s why it isn’t simply a pass or fail. It’s a scale that reflects the degree of sustainability implementation within the organization.<\/p>\n

What the Bioscore certification actually guarantees<\/h2>\n

The Bioscore standard structures its assessment into six areas. These are emissions, energy, water, waste, food and beverage (F&B), and social responsibility and good governance.<\/p>\n

However, what it certifies goes beyond reviewing these aspects separately. Bioscore verifies that the establishment has incorporated sustainability into its management system. It also checks that procedures are in place to measure impacts, analyze them, set objectives, and continuously monitor progress.<\/p>\n

This means the certification doesn’t validate that one hotel consumes less energy than another. Nor that it generates fewer emissions. What it certifies is that the organization has a system capable of managing those impacts in a structured way. That system relies on objective data, documented evidence, and continuous improvement processes.<\/p>\n

This distinction matters. Sustainability doesn’t depend only on achieving a good result at a given moment. It depends, above all, on having a methodology that allows for constant improvement. This is shown through traceable information, proving that improvement is part of the establishment’s day-to-day management.<\/p>\n

Who grants the certification and how it’s audited<\/h2>\n

Bioscore Sostenible S.L. is the owner of the standard.<\/p>\n

The process begins with gathering information and evidence. This happens through the Bioscore Data Platform. Next, a technical review checks the consistency and traceability of the documentation. Only then is the file sent to an independent certification body.<\/p>\n

It’s this third-party certifier who carries out the external audit. They decide whether the establishment meets the standard’s requirements. Only after passing this process does the accommodation receive the Bioscore certification.<\/p>\n

The certification is valid for twelve months. That’s why it must be renewed every year through a new audit based on updated information.<\/p>\n

Bioscore Sustainability and international sustainability initiatives<\/h2>\n

Bioscore’s methodology is aligned with internationally recognized sustainability frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It has also been developed to assess the integration of environmental, social, and governance criteria into the management of tourism establishments.<\/p>\n

Bioscore also takes part in the Travalyst Certifications Initiative<\/a>. This initiative, led by Travalyst, identifies certification schemes that declare compliance with the requirements of the upcoming EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT)<\/a> Directive. As part of this initiative, Bioscore has declared such compliance. That’s why it appears on the public list of certification schemes for accommodation providers published by Travalyst.<\/p>\n

Travalyst is an independent, not-for-profit international organization. It works alongside some of the leading companies in the travel and technology sector. These include Booking.com, Expedia Group, Google, Tripadvisor, Skyscanner, Amadeus, and Mastercard. Its goal is to promote reliable and comparable sustainability information in tourism.<\/p>\n

Bioscore has a strong presence in Spain, especially in the Comunitat Valenciana. There, it collaborates with HOSBEC<\/a>. It also takes part in destination-level sustainability projects, such as Lloret de Mar. In addition, it runs projects in numerous countries.<\/p>\n
