Biosphere Certification: What the Seal Actually Guarantees

You spot the turquoise circle with the leaf motif on a hotel door. And you wonder what it actually means. Is it a serious certification? Or is it just another marketing badge among the 200+ that exist in tourism today?

What Biosphere certification is

Biosphere is an international sustainability certification system. It was created by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), a Spanish non-profit founded in 1995. From its early days, moreover, RTI has held the support of UNESCO through a formal memorandum of understanding. On top of that, it is also a founding member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council itself.

The methodology was developed together with the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN). As a result, it continuously measures a hotel, destination, or tourism business’s real contribution. Specifically, it tracks progress against the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It also considers the Paris Agreement and the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism +20. Today, consequently, Biosphere is active in more than 77 countries. In addition, it counts over 4,400 certified companies and destinations.

What it actually guarantees

A hotel holding Biosphere Certified status has passed a structured assessment. Specifically, it’s organized around the same four pillars that underpin the GSTC:

• Sustainable management: documented policies, staff training, and ongoing measurement. Not a one-off statement of intent.
• Socioeconomic impact: local hiring and fair working conditions. In other words, tangible benefit to the community where the property operates.
• Cultural heritage: respect for and promotion of local traditions. Also, respect for the destination’s cultural surroundings.
• Environmental impact: management of energy, water, waste, and biodiversity. Always with continuous improvement targets, never static ones.

Furthermore, it’s a continuous-improvement system. Therefore, the property has to keep showing progress year after year. Passing once is simply not enough.

Who grants it and how it’s audited

The Responsible Tourism Institute runs the entire process. It does so through a fully online platform. First, the property uploads real evidence: invoices, photos, documents, and internal policies. Then, once it reaches the required threshold, comes the annual external audit. A third party carries it out, independent of both the hotel and RTI. And it comes at no extra cost within the subscription. During the audit, however, the property’s profile is frozen. This prevents last-minute changes. It only unlocks once the audit is passed. From there, ultimately, the certificate renews yearly. All under a continuous verification system that includes random checks.

Its relationship with the GSTC

This is where Biosphere stands out especially. The GSTC has formally recognized its standards for accommodations, tour operators, and destinations. Specifically, it considers them equivalent to its own criteria. But RTI has gone further still. It has achieved GSTC Approved status, for both hotels and tour operators as well as destinations. In fact, it’s the first organization worldwide to reach that status in both categories.

And this distinction matters. On one hand, “GSTC-Recognized” means the standard document itself contains the GSTC’s minimum criteria. On the other, “GSTC Approved” goes further. It means the GSTC’s own accreditation panel has reviewed the process. And it has confirmed that it’s applied professionally, objectively, and impartially. Biosphere has a strong footprint in Spain, where it was founded. However, its reach is global: it operates in more than 77 countries. Also, its platform is available in 9 languages. It applies to individual properties as well as entire destinations. For example, cities like Barcelona have built territory-wide programs under the Biosphere umbrella. Likewise, regions such as Thompson Okanagan, in Canada, were pioneers. In fact, it was the first in the Americas to earn Biosphere destination certification.

What it means for you as a traveler

When you book a Biosphere Certified property, you’re not relying on the hotel’s own self-assessment. Nor on a badge that can simply be purchased without verification. On the contrary: you’re booking a property that has been externally audited. Furthermore, it reports measurable progress against the UN SDGs. And, above all, its certification system has been directly validated by the GSTC as rigorous and objective. In practice, therefore, it’s one of the strongest guarantees available outside of direct certification by a GSTC-accredited body.

Biosphere combines something rare in the sector. On one hand, a rigorous methodology. On the other, formal GSTC recognition at the highest level available to a standard.
